“Why Can’t Photos Be Uploaded?” — Why NoteFor Keeps Public Diaries “Text-Only”

Hello from the NoteFor development team!

Every now and then, our users ask us a thoughtful question:

“Why can I attach photos to my private diary and shared exchange journals, but not to the public diaries in the Library?”

In this digital age, attaching beautiful photos to social media posts and blogs is second nature. Adding vivid pictures might seem to make life look more colorful and exciting.

However, this design isn’t a bug or an unfinished feature. It is a deeply intentional choice to keep public diaries text-only.

In this post, as a parent and as the creator of NoteFor, I would like to share the humble thoughts and hopes woven into this design philosophy ☕

Photos are wonderful, but don’t they sometimes tire you out?

Whenever we open modern social feeds, we are greeted by pristine café tables, perfectly plated gourmet dishes, and glittering weekend outings.

While looking at them can be entertaining, do you ever find subtle anxieties creeping in?

  • “Everyone else’s life looks so fulfilled and vibrant… what about mine?”
  • “If I’m going to post, I need to tidy up the room and take an Instagram-worthy shot.”
  • “I wonder how many likes this will get…?”

Before we even realize it, “enjoying daily life” takes a back seat to “how others perceive us.”

As a father raising children, I frequently felt this quiet friction: “Social media is convenient, but constantly comparing ourselves with others and obsessing over outside validation leaves our hearts exhausted.”

That is why our “Library” features only pure, unadorned words

With NoteFor, we decided to draw a clear distinction based on where and with whom you share your moments:

  • Private Journals & Exchange Diaries: Feel free to attach that special picture of the day 📸
  • Public Diaries in the Library: Intentionally text-only (no photos) ✍️

Why remove photos from a public space where anyone can read? There are two essential reasons:

1. Stepping off the “curated perfection” treadmill

In a shared exchange diary with family or close friends, a photo is pure, shared memory: “Look where we went today!” There is no competition or posturing.

In contrast, when photos enter an open, public arena, an unspoken pressure inevitably takes hold — the temptation to look fashionable, polished, or admirable compared to others.

By creating the Library as an entirely photo-free sanctuary, there is no stage for performative living. Without the pressure of visual curation, you can simply be yourself.

2. Listening closely to the gentle whisper of your heart

Photographs carry immediate visual weight. When a picture pops up on screen, our eyes lock onto it, and the written words often become secondary captions.

On a quiet, text-only canvas, however, every honest feeling comes alive: “Something small made me smile today,” or “I made a little mistake and felt down, but a hot cup of tea restored my calm.” You can sense the genuine warmth, breathing, and heartbeat of the writer.

We wanted the Library to be a peaceful refuge where you listen to how a fellow human actually felt today, rather than how picturesque their afternoon looked.

Memories with loved ones, unvarnished words in the Library

Here is how we invite you to enjoy NoteFor:

  • In your private journal or exchange diaries: Cherish your memories with your favorite snapshots.
  • In the public Library: Share your unvarnished, authentic words without makeup or pretense.

The Library has no comments section, no follower counts, and no vanity metrics. All you will ever receive is a quiet, gentle “flower” from someone who resonated with your story.

Rather than comparing yourself with the world, we hope NoteFor remains a quiet haven where you can gently embrace your own heart 🌱
